As you know (see prior posts) on Friday I went to see Crispin Glover present his slide show, screen his movie "What Is It?" followed by a Q&A.
I have to say it was a really enjoyable time, probably one of the neatest things I have done since moving to Arizona.. he was on for 3 nights, and the night I went was the first night. It was a fairly large theatre, and was probably 60-70% full...some people came from as far as Texas just to see the presentation.
I am not going to go into HUGE detail about what he presents because of two reasons:
1) The whole reason he travels around and does this is because he prefers it be digested as a live show, its part of the package AND
2) It doesn't do it justice and I don't want to ruin anything for people who might have the chance to see him for themselves.
I will however say it is worth it, and I look forward to attending the second film of the trilogy when he releases that and travels (he promised to come back to PHX)
Something I would like to mention though is that Crispin Glover is a RAMBLER, oh my - every question had like a 10-30 minute response, he is like the awesome history teacher I had in school that people would just pose questions to in hopes he would forget to assign homework. Although it is not rambling for the sake of doing so, I was impressed by what he had to say and it really got me to think about the art of film in ways I hadn't before. Most largely the point I would like to share, is the whole corprate multiplexs vs art house cinema. The reason he travels around and accompanies his movie (and does his slide show) is because he believes in the medium and wants to present it in more of an interactive live situation rather than just oh, you view it and its over. I think there is a huge value in that, both to the people presenting as well as the audience, how fun. I certainly enjoyed it. I would definitely go to more things like that if they were more prevalant, and its more true to the art and respectful to the audience instead of saying hey go see this in a huge cold place with overpriced concessions.
Because I didn't go to blogging school, no post could really sum up the night or the film, so I really just reccomend checking it out if you ever get the chance, and I consider myself very lucky I had the chance.
